The javelin is essentially a very light Spear, designed for throwing. It is the favorite weapon of hunters and skirmishers. It normally has a head of iron or steel. Other heads may be made for comparable craft checks, but will take penalties to attack and damage (stone -4). They are about 5 or 6 feet long, though sometimes slightly longer.
A javelin may be made without a head, which forgoes the forging craft check and lowers the price by 1/2, but it gives a -4 penalty to damage and gives the javelin a 5% chance to splinter and become useless on every successful attack.
The javelin is not intended for melee. You are always treated as nonproficient and thus take a -4 to attack.
As a Thrown Weapon, barring extraordinary circumstance, javelins are always retrievable.
