Taking 10 allows a character to assume that he rolled a 10 on a skill check. It represents a character's taking a relatively routine task slow to ensure success. In most cases, taking 10 is simply a safety measure —you know (or expect) that an average roll will succeed but fear that a poor roll might fail, so you elect to settle for the average roll (a 10). It is especially useful where an abnormally high roll won't help.

This can only be done when the character isn't under stress (such as being in combat).
