A Primary Ability represents a particular devotion to a particular facet of one's person. Characters can eventually choose up to three Primary Abilities: one at first level, one at sixth level, and one at sixteenth level. By declaring an Ability to be a Primary Ability, a character gains access to that Ability's Primary Ability Features. Characters without such a declaration only gain the standard Ability Features of an Ability.
