By attaching spikes to a shield, one gains a number of benefits. First, shield bashes deal 1d4 more damage. Second, the spikes help to both deflect blows and tend to encourage people to stay back, affording a +1 to AC. Last, the shield spikes may be used as if they were a light weapon in a grapple, though only the 1d4 from the spikes is dealt, and not the normal damage as well.
