Actions of Opportunity are any combative actions that characters perform against chracters that are Presenting an Opening.
In general, if a character is hit by an Action of Opportunity they automatically fail to complete the action that left them open in the first place (i.e. fail to stand up from prone, fail ranged attack), but there are exceptions. The use of magic, for example, almost always allows the use of the Concentration skill to avoid automatic failure as a result of damage.
