An character that is off guard is a character that has been caught unawares. They have not declared how they wish to break up their CA, and as such have a BDB and BAB of 0. They are Flat-footed, being denied their dexterity to AC.
In combat, you are off guard until your first turn, when you declare your CA distribution. If you are not in combat, you may declare your distribution at any time, readying yourself for any danger.
